We officially said hello to spring yesterday and what a pleasant sight it has been. California is in full bloom. With all the rain this winter, wild flowers and native poppies are flourishing all around us. The palm tree's are swaying in that warm LA air. All of a sudden that brisk cold winter we experienced feels long gone (until I woke up this morning to post and it's raining... Oh mother nature).
Anyways, back to last week when it was officially a heat wave. I put out the deck furniture, started choosing new vegetables for our beds and prematurely unpacked the 'summer' wardrobe boxes. It was a Thursday morning, I dropped the kids at school and thought about how refreshing it would be to celebrate spring this weekend with a cocktail infused with essential oils. I am not usually thinking about alcohol at 9am I promise. The sun has amazing effects on our soul, I closed my eyes and felt summer vibes wash over me. I got really excited at the possibility to entertain outside. I have to admit, I am not a great cocktail maker, but I am willing to up my game.
When I think of my friends and I think of cocktails, I think of Jamie Arrigo of Wallace & James. Jamie knows how to stir it up, from home made simple syrup to muddled berries. She is energetic, passionate and a lover for all things natural and sustainable. I knew she would be up for a mini holistic challenge to concoct a fresh spring cocktail with the addition of essential oils.
We discussed the list of possibilities: ginger, rosemary, lime, grapefruit... Jamie felt inspired by basil and lemon. So I popped over to her house and she started mixing. I love when women just open their fridge and feel inspired. Out came some plump blackberries, freshly picked lemons and some sugar as she was about to show me how to make home made simple syrup. A healthier alternative of the store bought version . I wanted to add something holistic to the cocktail, why not boost your immunity, uplift your mood, fight off stress and aid in digestion whilst letting loose.
So here it is: The Berry Basil Beneficial Cocktail recipe
1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of water, blackberries, 3 lemons, vodka, basil & lemon essential oil
- Prepare simple syrup by simmering 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup of water together until the sugar is dissolved. Remove from the heat and allow to cool for 5 minutes.
- Muddle two blackberries in a cocktail shaker. Add .75oz of simple syrup. .75oz of fresh squeezed lemon juice, 1.5 oz vodka, 1 drop basil essential oil and 1 drop lemon essential oil.
- Add ice and shake. Strain over a large ice cube. (Jamie recommends these) Garnish with a fresh sprig of sage.
Thank you Jamie for sharing and creating, even at 930 in the morning on a Thursday. It was fun sipping and sampling with you. Next time, it will be at sunset, on my deck, with snacks and friends I promise!!
